A powerful vanilla musk the likes of the one used in Dance With Me (VERY seductive yet subtle and cloud-like), and rich cardamom, and finally the nectar of peaches squeezed in the summer sun and concentrated to make a sugary peach liquor.
My reasoning for wanting to try this one is simple: it’s got peach, vanilla, and cardamom to jazz it up. The name was another selling point for me. It refers to a “jorogumo” ( 絡新婦), which is a demon from Japanese folklore that can take the form of a beautiful woman, or a giant spider. This scent was part of the Halloween 2015, so it is no longer available.
In the bottle: Mmmm, I’m getting peach cake with spices and a touch of boozy vanilla. So far, so good.
On the skin: This is really yummy. The peaches are very much candied peaches instead of fresh peaches, but it works with the spicy gourmand vibe. The cardamom adds the right amount of kick to cut the sweetness without being overpowering. The vanilla definintly gets softer on the skin, but it’s still present.
“Jorōgumo” from the Gazu Hyakki Yagyō by Toriyama Sekien.
TL;DR: Candied peach cake spiced with cardamom and drizzled with a little vanilla. A solid gourmand. 4/5.
Solstice Scents Cenobite
A deep vanilla bean which has a slight boozy liqueur note on application mixed with a pile of fresh vanilla beans and a sultry, smooth, rich and creamy french vanilla. Lovely for layering. This is not a sweet frosting/sugary/buttery vanilla. It is a sophisticated, pure and deeper vanilla bean scent.
I’m going to start by saying that I absolutely love Clive Barker. I would have wanted this for the name alone, but the scent is right up my alley too since vanilla is my favorite note. If you are wondering about the name, it references the Cenobites from The Hellbound Heart and Hellraiser: “When they come from the other side, they smell of vanilla.” This scent is unfortunately discontinued, so you would have to find a bottle from someone who is selling it.
In the bottle: Delicious, delicious vanilla with a hint of liqueur. It’s somewhat gourmand without being really gourmand. I’m already in love.
On the skin: AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE. I understand the hype for this one now. It’s so good. It’s just rich, pure, sensual vanilla with just a hint of booze to prevent it from being too sweet. I have only one problem with this: WHY IS IT DISCONTINUED I NEED A FULL BOTTLE NOW. Until I can find one, I will hoard my 2mL like I’m Gollum and Cenobite is the One Ring.
An actual photo of me holding my Cenobite fragrance except I’m smiling. This is Pinhead the Cenobite from Hellraiser for those who don’t know. The scent is named after this guy right here.
TL;DR: Smooth, sexy, delicious vanilla. Pinhead would approve. Need a full bottle STAT. 7/5.
Sixteen92 All the World’s a Stage
Rum-soaked apricots, dark chocolate, hazelnut liqueur, praline, amber, bourbon vanilla
This scent was the Sixteen92 2015 Circle Exclusive that came with the Women of Shakespeare collection. It’s tricky to find for that reason, but I managed to find half a bottle through the indie community on reddit. The notes are right up my alley and I was just in a production of “As You Like It”, so I had to get my hands on it. This scent has been discontinued, unfortunately, so you would have to buy it from someone who happens to have it.
In the bottle: I’m getting primarily chocolate, hazelnut and booze. Its sweet and gourmand, but not sugary.
On the skin: The apricots and praline come forward with a healthy dose of rum. The chocolate still lingers in the background with the hazelnut. There’s just a hint of amber in there to ground everything. I don’t get much vanilla, but I’m okay with that. Nothing in this smells artificial either. For some reason, there is something almost holiday-esque about this; the smell reminds me of a Christmas Pudding. The throw is good too. On me, the scent lasted for about 4 hours. If you like gourmands, but hate it when they’re too sweet, try to find a bottle of this.
TL;DR: Fruity, nutty dessert goodness. 4/5
